I noticed how well the volume was felt, despite the lack of a clear focus.

I noticed how well the volume is perceived, despite the lack of a clear focal point.
lo_ol, but does focal point convey volume? Here, the volume is conveyed by the interplay of planes.
Delicious picture

alexnik, volume in a flat image is conveyed by various methods, including linear, tonal, and other perspectives, as well as focus and blur. However, the latter is typical of photography, unlike fine art, where all planes are usually depicted in sharp focus.

lo_ol, comparing photography and painting is fundamentally incorrect. The perspective issue is clear.
Here, the author has achieved the goal of showing volume in a single plane. But focus has nothing to do with it. IMHO

alexnik, there's no need to compare them, but considering the principles of perceiving volume in a flat image together in painting and photography is very correct and useful. This isn't my idea; reread Lapin, or any of his books.

That's what I wrote in my first post: volume can be perceived well even without focus.
